16. Mérelle Waterfall


Nestled in the heart of the Vosges mountains in Gérardmer, this picturesque waterfall sees the Mérelle stream cascade over a porphyry slab in two main streams, from a height of approximately 5 metres.

Although its flow is modest, particularly in summer, the waterfall offers a peaceful natural setting, especially appreciated in spring and autumn when the waters are more abundant.

To reach the waterfall, hikers have several routes to choose from. From Gérardmer, head towards Ramberchamp on the D417, then park near the stadium. Next, take the forest road leading to Tête de Mérelle as far as the Belvédère des Mérelles car park. From there, follow the blue disc markers which will lead you to the waterfall after about a 15-minute walk.

Another option is to start from the Lido Appart Hotel car park, located along the D69. Cross the bridge opposite the hotel and follow the forest path. After an ascent of about 30 minutes, you will reach the waterfall. This route is more direct but has a steeper incline.

It is recommended to wear suitable hiking boots, as some sections can be slippery, especially in wet weather. Along the way, don't miss a visit to the Mérelle Tower, an observatory offering a 360° panoramic view of the Lake Gérardmer and its surroundings.
